Hi Trisha,
There is hope for treatment without surgery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok take a deep breath and have your parents check in to this treatment. 40 degrees is JUST a number...freaking out won't help you...well maybe just for a few minutes but seriously, this is a very realistic treatment for scoliosis.
Let me know if I can help. I would be happy to speak with your parents if they have question regarding treat...or if you do. We are hear to help and keep you educated about alternatives.

You may post any question here or reach me directly at
suebosler@verizon.net.
Hang in there!
It will be ok

Thank you all for sharing your stories and your positive words of encouragement! Always remember that there is hope & healing for people living with scoliosis that does not involve bracing or surgery.

I just returned from a conference in Montreal where many well-known scoliosis researchers presented the newest advances in scoliosis bracing (www.sosort.org). The statistics presented at this meeting suggested that 50% of people who wear a brace are considered failures! It's important to realize that, for most individuals wearing a brace, if the scoliosis gets worse by less than 5 degrees, the physician will consider this a success. The purpose of bracing is to keep the curve where it is at, not to correct it.

Spinal surgery is a significant undertaking, and it's normal to feel scared about any invasive procedure. Once it's done, it's difficult if not impossible to undo. Surgery should be the option of last resort. Many people undergo surgery because they just want their worries about scoliosis to be over. Sadly, it's never that simple! 20% of patients need more than one operation, and scoliosis can continue to progress, even after the operation. Surgery is not the answer for scoliosis - it merely replaces one deformity (a flexible but curved spine) with another (a straighter, fused spine).

CLEAR Institute's website and forum are full of success stories from people who were told to either "live with" their scoliosis, or that surgery was their only option. The good news is, there is a better way! They tried it, and it worked for them. There's no reason that you can't overcome your scoliosis in the same way. I'm always happy to share more information and help you to find the answers you are looking for, so please don't hesitate to contact me on this forum or at my e-mail below.

Never stop smiling, and keep your chin up! :-)
