I live close to a Clear doctor but once I had so many treatments the insurance refused to cover additional treatments even if it meant preventing surgery. How can we get the insurance companies to allow treatment for scoliosis? They only allow so many chiropractic appts in a given year. Any additional info would be helpfull as I'd love to continue treatment but can't afford to do so. |

Hi Kandilyn, I would encourage you to write and /or speak to your insurance carrier regarding your treatment compared to the cost of surgery. I am attaching a letter they may be helpful in guiding you. The more we can educate the insurance industry the better. You may also encourage them to read the treatment protocol as it compares to more traditional chiropractic care. Please let me know if we can further assist you. Dr. Sue Bosler December 1, 2008 Insurance company Re: Group Subscriber: Insured: To Whom It May Concern: We are submitting the enclosed paid bills for the intensive care treatment our daughter received at the Clear Scoliosis Clinic Also enclosed is a receipt for the purchase of a scoliosis traction chair. This is a required piece of equipment for at-home therapy to not only stabilize the results accomplished at the 2-week sessions at the clinic, but to continue spinal manipulation geared at completely straightening the spine. Our daughter was originally diagnosed with this condition by her pediatrician, at a wellness checkup. We were immediately referred to an orthopedic, Dr. X. We were told initially that her curvature was at approximately XX degrees. He x-rayed and monitored her for a period of X months, after which time we were told that she had progressed to X degrees. He then advised us to seek help at either X Hospital in and that the next course of action would probably be a brace followed by surgery. Having already done some research on this condition and the surgery, which required the implantation and connection of metal rods to the spine, we began looking for other alternatives. My chiropractor, Dr .Xrecommended we see Dr. X whose treatment focused on biomechanics. Dr. X began a course of treatment with weights and decompression therapy which lasted a month. After this time, he was able to correct some of the problems, but was unable to get any movement in the curvature of her spine. He then recommended we seek help through the Clear Scoliosis Clinic. We visited the Clinic in x month for a consultation and were told they felt that our child was a good candidate for their treatment. This gave us hope for a permanent correction without the invasive procedure of surgery, not to mention the debilitating effects of having such surgery. Our daughter is very involved in any activities ie (cheerleading, gymnastics, and volleyball.) She was X years old at the time, but has since turned X years old. Inserting metal rods in the back of a child this age would permanently take away all future possibilities of playing sports or participating in any aggressive physical activity. My research also supported many cases of patients where the metal rods corroded, bent or broke. Aside from all of the negative aspects of this surgery, the cost alone of approximately $100,000, far exceeds the cost of treatment through the Clear Scoliosis Clinic. We have, to date, spent the following: Scoliosis Traction Chair Cost $3,539.95 Total We are aware that full benefits for our daughters chiropractic and physical therapy care have been exhausted for this year. Bills have been approved for in-network coverage, but we were told that since all of her bills were considered chiropractic or physical therapy, no additional benefits would be paid. We are requesting that you review and take into consideration the enclosed bills for coverage under regular medical care. In light of the fact that this option was chosen versus surgery, which would have been considered a medical expense, we are hoping that this course of treatment will be re-evaluated for coverage. The Clear Scoliosis Clinic is doing amazing things for scoliosis patients. We have been witness to this as well as being a recipient of the benefits their treatment provides. Upon our first consultation visit, was diagnosed with a thoracic curvature of x degrees. After 3 months, her thoracic curvature is now at x degrees. We are scheduled to return to the clinic for x times over x months Subsequent visits will be every 3 to 4 months for no more than a week at a time until her spine is almost straight. Once again, we would greatly appreciate your consideration for any possible reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses we have incurred to date. Also, we sincerely hope that we have shed some light on the possibilities of alternative care for scoliosis patients outside of the prescribed treatments presented by the medical community as a whole.
