Scoliosis Correction: it's all in your head!
The purpose of the spine is to support the head in a weight-bearing environment while assisting locomotion and providing proprioceptive feedback. Forward head posture increases the perceived weight of the head, creates adverse mechanical tension on the spinal cord, and decreases spinal mobility. Scoliosis may develop as a reaction to the loss of the normal spinal curves; the loss of stability prompts the body to insert a new curve into the spine to compensate. Many approaches to scoliosis treatment are ineffective or even harmful because they fail to address the spine as a whole, and neglect the importance of the cervical spine in affecting gait & posture overall. Remember: da head bone connects to da neck bone, and de neck bone connects to de back bone!
The best method to ensure your young child does not develop scoliosis is simple: regular chiropractic check-ups! Low-intensity radiographic films (x-rays) of the lateral cervical spine are recommended to accurately pinpoint the position of the atlas and first cervical vertebra; research suggests this is the location of the spino-cerebellar loop, which is responsible for coordinating the motor and sensory input/output of the body and the brain. Flexion malpositions of C0-C1 should be corrected with a specific cervical adjustor (e.g., Arthro-Stim) or drop piece adjustment immediately. Be especially vigilant in cases of traumatic deliveries.

Spinal Fusion Surgery for Scoliosis decreases Ranges of Motion in the spine by 25% on average.
The Effect of Scoliosis Fusion Surgery on Spinal Motion: A Comparison of Fused & Nonfused Patients with Idiopathic Scoliosis was published in Spine 2006;31(3):309-314. This study flatly contradicts claims that victims - I mean, patients - of the Harrington rod implantation surgery will suffer no reduction in their flexibility and physical functioning. One of the main conclusions of this study was that patients who have undergone spinal fusion for treatment of their scoliosis have 25% less total spinal motion, on average, than similarily-matched scoliosis patients that did not have the surgery performed: the more levels of fusion, the greater the restriction in spinal mobility. It was previously believed that hypermobility would occur in nonfused spinal regions to compensate for reduced mobility at the fused locations; this claim was flatly rejected by the authors.
